Pelham Eliptical Link

The Pelham Elliptical Link is a stainless-steel Pelham bit combining snaffle and curb actions in a single bit. Multiple rein attachment options allow the rider to adjust the degree of control and leverage according to the desired action.

The mouthpiece features an oval elliptical link, a variation of the French link. Instead of a flat central lozenge, the two sides are joined by a rounded elliptical link. This design is intended to provide a more even distribution of contact and reduce the nutcracker action associated with some jointed mouthpieces.

A curb chain is included and is required for the Pelham's intended curb action.

Key Features & Benefits

• Stainless steel construction – durable and easy to maintain.
• Oval elliptical link mouthpiece – a rounded variation of the French-link design.
• Reduced nutcracker action – the elliptical centre link is designed to reduce this action.
• More even pressure over the bars – distributes contact across the mouthpiece.
• Independent side movement – allows the two sides of the mouthpiece to act more independently.
• Multiple rein positions – provides different options for control and leverage.
• Snaffle and curb actions – combines both functions in one bit.
• Curb chain included – required for the intended Pelham action.
• Can be used with two reins, a rein connector or a single rein.

Rein Options & Action

The Pelham Elliptical Link offers three main rein configurations:

1. Two Reins

Two reins allow the rider to operate the snaffle and curb actions separately.

This gives the rider the greatest ability to adjust the balance between direct mouth contact and curb leverage.

2. Rein Connector

A rein connector can attach to both the snaffle and curb rings, with the riding rein attached to the connector. This allows the Pelham to be used with one rein while combining the two actions.

3. Single Rein

A single rein can be attached directly to either the snaffle ring or curb ring, depending on the desired action and level of control.

How the Elliptical Link Works

The oval elliptical link is essentially a variation of a French-link mouthpiece.

Instead of the traditional flat central lozenge, the two sections of the mouthpiece are joined by a rounded elliptical link.

According to the supplied product information, this design provides:

• Reduced nutcracker action
• More even pressure over the bars
• More independent movement of the two sides of the mouthpiece

How the Pelham Works

A Pelham combines snaffle and curb actions in one bit.

The snaffle rein provides more direct contact with the mouth, while the curb rein activates the leverage and curb action.

The curb chain is an integral part of this action. Correct fitting of the curb chain and appropriate rein configuration are therefore important.

Ideal For

• Riders wanting snaffle and curb functions in one bit
• Experienced riders familiar with Pelham bits
• Riders requiring adjustable rein configurations
• Horses suited to an elliptical-link mouthpiece
• Riders wanting a jointed mouthpiece with a more rounded central link

Fitting & Use

Correct fitting is important with any Pelham, particularly when using the curb rein.

The bit should be selected according to the horse's mouth conformation and fitted according to the manufacturer's recommendations.

Riders should understand how changing the rein attachment changes the action of the bit. Where there is uncertainty about fit or configuration, professional bit-fitting advice is recommended.
